GreenMech’s new Aborist 200 chipper on show at Confor Woodland Show

0

GreenMech will be exhibiting their new Arborist 200 chipper at the Confor Woodland Show 2017 – the largest model in their Arborist range. In addition, visitors to stand E6 will also be able to see the ArbTrak 150 and CS100 machines and consult with the sales team for comprehensive technical advice.

The Arborist 200 is the newest introduction to GreenMech’s traditional in-line format, road-tow chipper range and picks up where the popular Arborist 150 leaves off. It features a generous 1200mm x 840mm in-feed hopper which aids bushy brash reduction and leads to a generous 200mm x 280mm letterbox-style in-feed throat opening. The twin horizontal, hydraulic rollers are powered by a 45hp turbo diesel engine and efficiently crush woody material with minimal lateral movement. As with the rest of the Arborist range, the Arborist 200 features a range of new features including a folding table, bottom control bars, LED lights, infeed touch controls and GreenMech’s patented disc-blade technology as standard.

Also on show is GreenMech’s ArbTrak 150 chipper, launched in 2012 to effortlessly get to hard-to-reach locations alongside the compact gravity-feed CS100, designed with the professional Landscaper, Arborist or Parks Manager in mind.

Supporting GreenMech at the show will be Ashley Stevens of newly appointed local dealer GA Groundcare. Responsible for the Wiltshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire areas, GA Groundcare specialise in professional and commercial groundcare and arboricultural equipment, changing suppliers to GreenMech in May 2017.

The Making of Three Gardens by Jorge Sánchez

jorge sanchez

‘The Making of Three Gardens’, by Jorge Sánchez, offers a unique and personal insight into the craft of garden design, illustrated throughout with specially commissioned photographs by Andre Baranowski. The book explores three of SMI Landscape Architecture’s recent private gardens in detail, revealing the evolution of each design.

Jorge Sánchez, a principal partner at SMI, explains the thought processes behind these very different gardens, of which two are in Florida and one is in Scarsdale, New York. He discusses his clients’ unique requirements and the particular challenges faced, from finding plants hardy enough to withstand the ravages of Palm Beach’s winter winds, to creating a garden in Miami with a Long Island aesthetic.

SMI Landscape Architecture is known for its estate masterplanning, its public gardens and streetscapes, and its thoughtful private gardens. The firm applies a ‘botanical garden’ approach to its schemes, using exotic planting and elements of classical European design to create spectacular, carefully considered spaces that are perfectly tailored to its clients’ needs.

Sánchez’s expert insights provide a strong sense of participation – with the clients, with the climate, landscape and local flora, and with the other designers involved in each commission, including sculptors, architects and lighting specialists. It’s clear from Andre Baranowski’s illuminating photographs that such collaborative efforts result in truly remarkable gardens.

As Sánchez explains in his introduction to this inspiring book, ‘landscape gardening … has allowed me to fulfil and enrich my life in ways I could never have imagined.’

Lafarge Postmix is composed of a selected blend of cements and aggregates intended for domestic use. Easy to use, the product requires no mixing – just add water. It sets in five to 10 minutes and then rapidly hardens, allowing for fence panel hanging in around 30 minutes.

Postmix fixes all types of wood, metal and concrete posts, in all types of soil. It comes in a plastic bag, meaning it can be stored outside, off the ground, without the risk of deterioration.

Jeremy Lee, sales director at Aggregate Industries comments: “Postmix is the ideal solution for tradesmen, offering ease of application, more speed, less mess and assured performance. Simply dig a hole to the required size, half fill the hole with water and place the post in the hole. GreenBlue Urban celebrates its 25th anniversary

GreenBlue Urban

GreenBlue Urban talks us through its 25 years:

The month was July, the year 1992 – A landscape gardener from Hastings, East Sussex having studied horticulture, arboriculture, tree nomenclature and landscape design at Plumpton Agricultural College soon realised there were causes for early tree mortality.

On a particularly dry summer he discovered that drought stress was the biggest single killer for newly planted trees. Back home in the family garden shed after abundant research a simple solution was created; a perforated tube, fixed to a tree stake, looping around the root system made tree watering hugely more efficient. The RootRain Metro had arrived and the forenamed company Greenleaf was created.

Rolling forward to 1997 saw the introduction of the ReRoot and RootDirector range. Then to 2001 RootCell, the world’s first commercial load bearing soil cell for urban trees.

With the introduction of ArborSystem – the complete urban tree pit package, the company was growing from strength to strength. Now distributing on a global scale, addressing and educating on the prevention of premature tree loss.

2013 saw the name change to GreenBlue Urban, a re-brand reflecting the maturity of the product range, incorporating the move into Sustainable Urban Drainage tree pits.

The pinnacle achievement was in 2015 when GreenBlue Urban moved into its own purpose built premises – Northpoint, Bodiam, East Sussex.  With room to grow the business and green infrastructure for many years to come.

With numerous innovative developments on the horizon, these are exciting times for GreenBlue Urban which stands by its mission of enabling sustainable cities through green and blue infrastructure.

A solar system stroll is the star of Eden’s stunning space show this summer

0
0

Intrepid space travellers will be able to explore all the planets of our solar system as part of a fabulous new exhibition at the Eden Project this summer (July 27 to September 3).

This amazing adventure has been devised and built by Eden’s production team in collaboration with experts from the UK’s National Space Centre and the European Space Agency.

The journey, known as the solar system safari, will start with a giant, moving projection of the Sun, complete with solar flares shooting from its surface.

Visitors then move to the desolate wasteland of Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun, before travelling to the searing, volcanic landscape of Venus, complete with a projection of its surface eruptions.

Explorers are then treated to a spectacular “fly-by” of Earth, getting a beautiful, immersive view of our planet as astronauts see it from space.

Next comes perhaps the most recognisable of planets in our solar system, Mars, which will be represented by a red, craggy landscape and a prototype of the ExoMars rover being developed by Airbus in the UK.

Visitors will then travel to the first of the gas giants and the biggest planet in our solar system, Jupiter. Because it would be impossible to walk on the surface of the planet, Eden explorers will view the beautiful planet from Europa, one of 69 moons that orbit Jupiter.

The other gas giant in our solar system, Saturn, is next on the journey and it will be rendered as a 3D hologram, viewed from an icy cave on its moon Enceladus.

The milky-blue icy landscape of Uranus, the coldest planet in our solar system is next, followed by its fellow ice giant Neptune, the furthest planet from the Sun, which will be represented by a hazy, chilly landscape.

The end of the magical journey will be “landing” on Earth, represented by a lush and verdant garden conceived and built by Eden’s award-winning garden designer Emma Gunn alongside other horticulturists and apprentices.

The garden is inspired by Caribbean planting and landscape and will feature a waterfall, lagoon and a veranda to show human dependence on plants.

Chris Pritchard, Eden’s programme producer, said: “The solar system safari will be the centrepiece of our biggest, most ambitious summer holiday programme yet. It will be grand and awe-inspiring, offering our visitors the chance to walk on the surface of planets where no humans have ever visited.

“We hope that experiencing the barren grandeur of our solar system before returning to the lush and exotic gardens representing Earth will give people a new sense of perspective and encourage them to better look after our planet.”

The solar system safari is part of the Eden Project’s Journey into Space season, which will see the iconic attraction filled with space-themed fun, also including astronaut training and a chance to come face to face with an alien visitor.

All Journey into Space activities are included in the Eden admission price. For more information or to book tickets, see www.edenproject.com.

Wyevale Nurseries say the shrub is back

Wyevale

Wyevale Nurseries has recently announced that it has seen growth in 2016 and 2017 so far of more than 10% each year on its shrub category after several years of decline. The Hereford-based company has seen significant increases in reserves for 2018 already placed for shrubs with a number of general A-Z lines already selling out.

Adam Dunnett, sales & marketing director at Wyevale Nurseries, said: “This is fantastic news and shows shrubs are making a comeback. There is a demand from retailers and from the amenity market too. Flagship shrub ranges for us include the Hydrangea such as the Hydrangea Magical Series, for which we have UK exclusivity, and Hydrangea Miss Saori, winner of Chelsea Flower Show Best New Plant for 2014 and not forgetting Hydrangea LA Dreaming, which flowers with pink, purple and blue flowers on the same plant. A stunning shrub.

“Phormium is also a very popular shrub with our customers and we have seen an increase in demand for Phormium ‘Chocomint’. It is a distinct two tone Phormium with chocolate midribs and mint edges.

“We have a new Phormium for 2018, which is Phormium Blondie, a dwarf variety with an arching habit. Our Phormium production has increased by more than 60% for 2018 so we will have about 40,000 3ltr pots and 8,000 7.5ltr pots.

“We have also reintroduced some of the standard A-Z reserves in to the 2018 catalogue such as the Ceanothus collection. There are also several new shrub introductions in the catalogue such as Ceanothus ‘Cool Blue’, Cordyline ‘Electric Pink’, Magnolia ‘Cameo’, Syringa Bloomerang Collection, Dianella ‘Wyeena’ and Ilex ‘Little Rascal’.”

Ceanothus ‘Cool Blue’ is a variegated Ceanothus, which is full hardy. Upright and broadly spreading in habit it remains neatly compact. The foliage has a deep green centre with striking cream contrasting margins. The plant will be smothered in pale blue sweetly scented flowers in late spring.

Adam added: “Cordyline ‘Electric Pink’ is outrageously bright. Shocking electric pink edges with darker red markings up the centres of the leaves. A stunning variety, bound to tempt impulse buys. Ideal for container planting or as single specimens.

“Another new shrub is Magnolia ‘Cameo’. This Magnolia is extremely floriferous producing masses of purple-red flowers with centres which fade from red to white. The flower shape is similar in form to tulips. It has a compact habit and will form a small tree in time.

“The Syringa Bloomerang Collection are compact growing repeat blooming Syringas. They are highly fragrant and pink or dark purple flowers are produced in spring and again in mid-summer to autumn. The collection is highly attractive to butterflies.”

Dianella ‘Wyeena’ is an architectural plant to bring drama to the garden. The broad foliage is olive green with white margins and grows with an upright, arching form. Ideal for planting in swathes or as background plants to smaller grasses or shrubs. It has great cold and frost tolerance.

Adam continued: “As its name suggests Little Rascal is a compact, dense evergreen with spiny bright green leaves and small white flowers in spring. The foliage turns deep purple in winter, is eye catching and gives great seasonal colour throughout winter.”

Mayor welcomes grants for RHS Garden Bridgewater

0

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennett has welcomed two major grants which will help the biggest garden project in Europe to go ahead.

City Mayor Paul Dennett said: “This is fantastic news and will help bring two major elements of the historic grounds back to life. Salford City Council is delighted to be working with the RHS and Peel Land and Property on RHS Garden Bridgewater which will bring jobs, business opportunities and visitors to Salford.”

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has been awarded two major grants to support the development of RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford. A grant of £5 million has been given by The Garfield Weston Foundation to support the development of the historic walled garden, and £0.5 million has been awarded by Arcadia, a charitable fund of Lisbet Rausing and Peter Baldwin, to develop the garden’s lakes.

The magnificent eleven-acre walled garden, one of the most impressive original features of the historic grounds at Worsley New Hall, Salford, will be the piece de rèsistance of RHS Garden Bridgewater. It is also planned that it will be completed in time for the opening of the garden in 2020. One of the largest in the country, it was constructed in the early 1840’s and comprised an impressive sequence of kitchen gardens to service the long gone house. As little of the original planting remains, its restoration, thanks to Garfield Weston, is one of the most ambitious horticultural projects of the 21st century.

The grant from Arcadia will fund the restoration of the historic lake, construction of a new lake, and other work to improve the surrounding biodiversity of RHS Garden Bridgewater.

RHS director general, Sue Biggs, says: “We are delighted by these grants as they demonstrate the level of confidence and faith that people have in our plans to bring this remarkable garden back to life. The walled garden and our beautiful lakes are at the very heart of our ambitious plans to make RHS Garden Bridgewater in Salford one of the best in the country.”

Philippa Charles, director of The Garfield Weston Foundation, said: “Our Trustees were delighted to support RHS Garden Bridgewater and anticipate it will provide many opportunities in the North West from jobs and volunteering to education and training. We hope the beautiful walled garden will be a jewel in the centre of the project – it is a quintessential secret garden that will be accessible to all visitors.”

Anthea Case, principal advisor, Arcadia, says: “RHS Garden Bridgewater will prove an invaluable asset for both local wildlife and people. We are delighted to be a playing a role in the garden’s development and helping to secure its biodiversity.”

Clearance of many brambles and other overgrown shrubs to uncover what is left of the walled garden’s productive history has already begun, and it will be the first area to be planted.

The outer walled garden will include a mix of ornamental and productive gardening, community allotments and a therapeutic garden, while the southern walled garden will concentrate on vegetable and fruit production. At the very centre will be the northern walled garden; designed by masterplanner Tom Stuart-Smith; a flower garden inspired by the earliest known forms of garden, complete with a lily pond.

In the years ahead, a new Learning Centre will be added in the garden, as will a major glasshouse on the site of the old house ruins, terraces will be restored and new areas of horticulture added.

The initial cost of creating the garden is £31.2 million. The RHS has committed £14.2 million to the project and Salford City Council have already committed to fund £5 million towards onsite infrastructure costs. Fundraising for RHS Garden Bridgewater continues, with a target of £6.5 million still to raise to achieve the opening of the RHS vision in Greater Manchester; to enrich everyone’s life through plants, and make the UK a greener and more beautiful place.

RHS Garden Bridgewater is a result of a collaboration between the RHS, Peel Land and Property, and Salford City Council. All legal processes are complete and the RHS now has a 999 year lease on the garden.

110 of parks and green spaces maintained by idverde flying the Green Flag

A record-breaking 1,797 UK parks and green spaces received the prestigious Green Flag when this year’s awards were announced on 18 July. The international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained, and has excellent visitor facilities.

Among the 110 Green Flag accredited parks and green spaces idverde maintains on behalf of its local authority clients are a staggering 28 in The London Borough of Southwark, an increase of three in the borough since last year. Southwark Council now boasts the second highest number of Green Flag accredited parks of any London authority, and the third highest of any local authority in England, a fantastic achievement.

We know how much volunteers enjoy getting involved in Green Flag, as it acknowledges their sterling efforts and gives their local park a national quality charter-mark.  So last year, specifically at the request of the Friends Groups, idverde entered three new parks and greenspaces into the Award for the London Borough of Bromley – and were thrilled that all three passed and will soon be proudly flying their flags!

Managing director of idverde’s Community Open Spaces Division, Clive Ivil, said: “As a long-time supporter of the Green Flag Awards, idverde is extremely pleased that the number of our clients’ parks receiving a Green Flag has increased again this year, with our teams having contributed to 13 new Green Flag wins, and the retention of 97 others.

“This is testament to the maintenance teams who work so hard year-round to keep our country’s parks in top condition, our clients’ commitment to presenting their parks at their best, and to all the individuals and stakeholder groups who use and cherish their local green spaces.”

International Green Flag Award Scheme manager Paul Todd said: “We are delighted to be celebrating another record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award scheme.

“Each flag is a celebration of the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. The success of the scheme, especially in these challenging times, demonstrates just how much parks matter to people.”

Shipman Martin specify Tobermore paving for Irish Building Project of the Year

0
0

The Analog Devices Building at the University of Limerick was constructed as part of the ground-breaking Bernal Project and was since awarded the Irish Building Project of the Year at the Irish Building and Design Awards 2016 in Dublin. Irish architect, Brady Shipman Martin, was appointed to design the external landscape and Tobermore helped make their job easier with the provision of an attractive paving solution that complemented the distinctive new building whilst providing continuity with the other areas on campus.

The Bernal Project was a €54 million investment in research excellence at the University of Limerick. The initiative was named after John Desmond Bernal who was born in Tipperary in 1901 and went on to become one of Ireland’s most influential scientists of the 20th century. The substantial investment funded the expansion of the existing research capacity and the construction of a state-of-the-art new building for the Applied Sciences and Engineering faculty at the University, the recruitment of ten world-leading professors and the provision of a start-up fund to support their teaching and research activity. State contributions and University funding formed 30% of the €54 million and the remaining 70% was funded philanthropically, including a significant donation directly from Analog Devices.

Manuel Smalis, Landscape Architect at Brady Shipman Martin, explained that the overall objective of the project was to have the facility recognised as a world-leading research centre that will deliver real impact for Ireland. On a design level, Manuel outlined that Brady Shipman Martin’s job was to “create a high quality hard landscape that would complement the existing campus and offer a good lifestyle. We also wanted to achieve a low maintenance space with materials that would provide a low carbon footprint.”

RKD’s building design was very unique and modern in style and therefore an aesthetically pleasing hard landscaping method was needed to make the external materials on site come together. Paving was decided as the most appropriate hard landscaping material as Manuel commented: “This decision was very much based on aesthetics as we knew paving could provide a visually attractive landscape.”

Already familiar with Tobermore’s superior product quality, Brady Shipman Martin liaised with Tobermore’s ROI Sales team to source a suitable paving product for the project. Manuel noted what impressed him most about Tobermore paving: “The high quality finish, the environmental benefits and the retention of aesthetics over time exceeded expectation.”

Tobermore’s hugely popular Tegula block paving was selected as the best solution for the site. Tegula is manufactured with an aged, antique finish that creates a charming, traditional look for any application it is used on. Manuel commented: “We were impressed with the unique look that Tegula offered and we knew it would complement the surrounding site and provide continuity between the different areas of the campus.” Tegula was specified in the understated colours of Natural and Charcoal and laid in a wide colour band pattern reaching from one end of the building to the other, adding interest to the site. This colour choice and pattern was a wonderful accompaniment to the brick and contemporary grey cladding on the Analog Devices Building.

Robert Reidy, director of Buildings and Estates at the University of Limerick commented on the result and his hopes for the facility: “The iconic design of the Analog Devices Building makes it a stand out building on the University of Limerick campus and the research work which will be carried out in the building will significantly support Ireland’s national research priorities and contribute to the economic development of the country.” (University of Limerick News Online. University of Limerick, 2016).

Manuel commented: “Brady Shipman Martin is very proud to have been involved in the award-winning design scheme and it’s very pleasing to see how well our landscape design was brought to life on site.

“I would definitely recommend Tobermore paving products and will be using them again in future.”

The project was successfully delivered in 2016 and is hoped to significantly support Ireland’s national research priorities and contribute to the economic development of the country.

Shed Grounds Maintenance achieves certification to the revised 2015 standards for ISO 9001 & ISO 14001 in record time

0
0

Shed Grounds Maintenance have announced that it has completed the transition and certification of its quality and environmental management systems to the latest ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards – 12 months ahead of the deadline.

Peter Botham, managing director of Shed Grounds Maintenance, said: “We are committed to ensure that our business meets the highest standards of quality and environmental management. We made it a priority to achieve the transition to the new standards which we are proud to have attained a full 12 months ahead of the deadline for compliance.”

Botham continued: “The new standards are very much in alignment with our DNA – they ensure that our management systems are fully integrated with our business strategies. In order to achieve the transition, we were able to demonstrate Shed’s commitment to the key changes and that our processes reflect the aspects, impacts and risks we see as a business as well as the context in which we operate. Achieving the transition to the new standards proves to our clients and employees that our management and environmental systems are central to our operation, continue to be of the highest standard and fully conform to the latest best practice.”

ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards were published in their final form in September 2015 and are the first major revision of the standards since 2000. Key changes include greater emphasis on building a management and environmental system suited to each organisation’s particular needs. This includes a requirement that those at the top of an organisation are involved and accountable. It also introduces risk-based thinking to make the systems a preventive tool and a platform for continuous improvement. The deadline for achieving compliance is September 2018, after which an organisation not certified to the new standard is no longer compliant.

Carla Whyte, UK senior client propositions manager at BSI commented: “By gaining certification to both ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, Shed Grounds Maintenance has demonstrated that they are carrying out best practice in quality management and environmental management. Certification to these standards will bring a number of benefits including stakeholder confidence, improved business processes and increased customer satisfaction. Shed should be delighted that they’ve achieved this ahead of the deadline.”

New shoots for wildlife friendly gardening, as competition sees record breaking entries

0

On Wednesday 19 July, Dorset’s most wildlife friendly gardens were celebrated at Castle Gardens in Sherborne at Dorset Wildlife Trust’s annual Wildlife Friendly Garden Competition, which is sponsored by The Gardens Group. This year’s competition not only saw a record number of entries, with over 75 gardens from schools and visitor centres to small patios and large meadows entered, but it also received entries from younger gardeners, with Charlie, the youngest contender ever to enter, picking up a Highly Commended in the Small Garden category.

Before the awards were announced, RHS qualified gardener and author, Kate Bradbury, took guests on an inspiring ‘warts and all’ journey, revealing how she turned a small basement flat garden in Brighton filled with decking and concrete and not a glimpse of wildlife in sight, into a haven for local bees, butterflies and birds. Kate now receives an abundance of species into her urban garden and provided the 165-strong audience with some useful advice and tips on how to welcome life back into any sized garden.

Mike Burks, managing director of The Gardens Group, explained: “Each year the bar is raised even higher and the entrants into the competition get more creative and sophisticated in their efforts to provide vital corridors for our wildlife. This year we saw more life and entries than ever before, and it’s an absolute pleasure to see how this way of gardening is progressing among all ages and us wildlife friendly gardeners no longer have to hide in the dark! I thoroughly enjoy visiting these gardens during the judging process and seeing the difference these wonderful havens are making to the county’s wildlife, I hope everyone left feeling proud of their efforts and inspired to keep it up.”

Först, a leading supplier of high performance and robust woodchippers, is fully prepared for the Stage V emissions regulations coming into force in 2019 with the launch of a new fuel efficient, petrol powered woodchipper.

The ST6P is an extension of Först’s popular range of six-inch capacity machines, which is powered by a 37hp V twin petrol engine, meaning the woodchipper not only weighs under 750kg, but also matches the strength and performance that users have come to expect from Först’s diesel powered machines.

Specifically designed for contractors, arborists, landscapers and farmers, Först were able to manufacture the sub 750kg ST6P woodchipper through the use of a lighter engine, GRP panels and a shorter chassis. This allowed Först to utilise the same chipping chamber, flywheel, hopper, and feed roller system used on its popular ST6 machine, building on its reputation of bringing fast, aggressive and robust woodchippers to market.

Doug Ghinn, director at Först, commented: “The new engines emissions regulations coming into force in 2019 will have a huge impact on the industry and it’s vitally important that we introduce a new Stage V compliant machine to ensure our customers can be fully prepared for these changes far ahead of time.

“Diesel engines will continue to be popular in the arboriculture industry, but it’s important that operators are aware that petrol engines can maintain the power and robustness that diesel engines provide, with the added benefit of being quieter during operation.

“The introduction of the ST6P not only delivers exceptional performance and reliability, but also ensures users don’t have to incur costs to obtain the necessary license to tow a machine over 750kg, offering true value to tree surgeons and contractors.”

The ST6P woodchipper boasts the features and benefits contractors and tree surgeons have come to expect with Först, including the manufacturer’s unique feedroller system (FörstGrip), which ensures exceptional crushing power. The FörstGrip top feed roller climbs on an arc toward the timber, pulling material down toward the flywheel and naturally climbing butt ends to make the infeed grip exceptional to break the toughest of forks and limbs.

The machine also features an open top flywheel system ensuring chip is thrown, not blown, minimising blockages on wet material and helping to maintain increased velocity when chipping.

As with the whole range of Först woodchippers, the ST6P comes with a three-year warranty as standard for complete peace of mind and is backed up by Först first class service offering.

Landscape supplier Green-tech has supplied 9,000 Tubex tree shelters and 80,000 tree spirals for the first phase of the creation of a new 279ha woodland in the Kilpatrick Hills.

The woodland, located just nine miles from the centre of Glasgow, has been commissioned by Forest Enterprise Scotland, the government agency responsible for managing Scotland’s National Forest Estate.

Contractor Highfield Forestry won the contract and is working on behalf of Forest Enterprise Scotland to oversee and manage this vast productive broadleaf plantation. Based in Perth, Scotland Highfield Forestry currently manage around 10,000ha of woodland throughout the UK.

The work commenced in summer 2016 and phase one has seen trees planted on the Kilpatrick Braes and deer fences installed. The main tree planting work is scheduled to take place over three phases across three years with foundation works being completed in spring 2019.

Over the project life 763,159 new trees will be planted in the Kilpatrick Hills, The planting will follow detailed Forest Design Plans that have been through a consultation process with the public and many other interested parties.

The design includes productive broadleaves and conifer species along with many areas of native woodlands and open ground to fulfil all objectives of multifunctional forestry. The new forests will benefit the biodiversity and landscape of the surrounding areas and will, in time, provide great opportunities for recreation.

Frederic Drion of Highfield Forestry commented: “We’ve used Green-tech for a number of years as they supply quality materials at very competitive prices. From enquiries and advice through to orders and delivery we always receive a great service.”

Dan Pearson and Laura Gatti to headline Palmstead Nurseries Soft Landscape Workshop 2018

Palmstead’s Workshop 2018 on Wednesday 24 January plans to throw a light on eco urban architecture and the rise of vertical forests and roof gardens.

As the urban jungle grows year on year and city populations swell around the world, the question of how to mitigate pollution and climate change has been taken up by an innovative group of landscape architects and garden designers.

Palmstead Nurseries hope to provide answers to these questions and more at their 10th annual workshop, also marking the start of the company’s 50th year of trading.

Nick Coslett, marketing manager at Palmstead said: “The pressure is on to find a solution to the biggest question faced by those of us working in planning, design and construction namely: how do we mitigate pollution, encourage biodiversity and create solutions for future generations of city dwellers? Planting on podium decks over structures, with their greater soil depths, allows structural multi-level planting providing greater benefits, niches and ecosystem services. At Palmstead 2018 we hope that the Soft Landscape Workshop will not only address these issues but inspire more designers and architects to embrace the idea of greening every surface.”

Dan Pearson and Laura Gatti have been engaged as key note speakers at Palmstead Nurseries forthcoming Soft Landscape Workshop and will be speaking about vertical forests and gardens over structures.

Dan Pearson, the RHS multi-award winning landscape designer and Laura Gatti, agronomist and co-designer of the ‘Bosco Verticale’ (Vertical Forest) in Milan, will speak about increasing biodiversity in design, selecting the right plants and trees for vertical, balcony and roof schemes as well as looking at the reasons why the industry needs to look in greater depth at greening every surface.

This important trend of greening roof spaces has taken hold in London with 1.3 million square-feet of roofs now has green coverage, according to livingroofs.org.

The plants we choose and the soil we use are paramount to the success of these green spaces in the sky.  Leading independent soil scientist and landscape engineering consultant Tim O’Hare has been invited to speak at Palmstead’s Soft Landscape Workshop in January and hopes to share the secrets to success enjoyed in his portfolio of projects which include: the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Battersea Power Station, Jubilee Gardens, Terminal 5 Heathrow and Ascot Racecourse.

Palmstead’s Soft Landscape Workshop will be held on Wednesday 24 January 2018 at the Ashford International Hotel in Kent.

This year the company will be celebrating their 10th annual workshop and also mark the start of the company’s 50th year of trading. Nick Coslett adds: “It is a special year for us at Palmstead and we feel it’s incumbent upon us to tackle the biggest topics head on. If we are to produce good urban and public realm spaces for future generations then we need to urgently address the greening of our cities. Dan Pearson, Tim O’Hare and Laura Gatti are leading the field and we are sure they will inspire our delegates to grasp the nettle and think outside the box.”

The Soft Landscape Workshop regularly attracts an audience of up to 300 professional practitioners ranging from garden designers, landscape architects, landscape contractors and green space managers.

Wedgewood’s Gold Medal winning garden relocated

Wedgwood’s Show Garden ‘A Classic re-imagined’ designed and created by the multi-award-winning designer Sam Ovens, won a Gold Medal at the inaugural RHS Chatsworth Flower Show in June 2017. The Show Garden is an important part of Wedgwood’s partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) which kicked off at Chelsea Flower Show in May 2017.

Sam Ovens, together with Cheshire based Landstruction have completed works on the relocation of the garden to the World of Wedgwood in Barlaston, Stoke-on-Trent which opened on the 24 of July.

This initiative is a showcase of Wedgwood’s dedication to nature and garden to improve our surrounding and quality of living. The Landstruction team worked alongside Sam Ovens in the planting of the garden, covering a larger area than showcased at RHS Chatsworth Flower Show to create a space of reflection and recreation for the local community.

Commenting on the garden moving to The World of Wedgwood, Sam Ovens said: “I can’t wait to work with the local community, to see their reaction to the garden. I hope they will be surprised as it will be something they wouldn’t necessarily expect to see…”

The headline partnership showcased at RHS Chatsworth celebrated the exciting reunion of two iconic British brands that share a creative history and vision. John Wedgwood, founded the RHS in 1804 and was the eldest son of the famous English potter and entrepreneur Josiah Wedgwood, who founded Wedgwood in 1759.

David Binks, managing director at Landstruction added: “Landstruction is proud to work with such an established brand as well as one of the brightest young talents across the horticultural industry in Sam Ovens. We specialise in creating exceptional tailor-made projects as well as providing world class service and this latest installation showcases our ability to deliver bespoke customer experiences once again. We are delighted with the result already but as the garden evolves through the seasons, it will simply get better and better. I cannot wait to return again and enjoy the garden for myself!”

Aspects of the Wedgwood DNA have been intertwined within Sam Oven’s horticultural design. The central feature of the garden is a contemporary take on living space, inspired by Wedgwood’s attitudes to interior living of blurring the ‘outside with the inside’. The water fountains symbolise not only the importance of water for wellbeing but is a nod to the innovation of the canals as a transport system leading to the success of Wedgwood in the founding years. The geo-metric design of the garden paired with traditional masonry illustrates a timeless chic design style that can be achieved by juxtaposing the old with the new in an unexpected way which has been important to Wedgwood over the years.

The RHS Flower Shows have also been the perfect context to launch the Wedgwood Tea Conservatory – a place to socialise and relax from the hussle of the everyday life being surrounded by nature and garden. Now with the garden coming to the World of Wedgwood this further enhances the environment also for its exclusive Wedgwood tea room.

HTA restored water gardens opens at Hemel Hempstead

HTA’s restoration of The Water Gardens at Hemel Hempstead opened on the 22 July. The Gardens were designed by the renowned landscape architect Geoffrey Jellicoe and are a highly significant example of post-war twentieth century modernist landscape. They were placed on English Heritage’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest in 2010.

The project creates a revitalised and well-used park with a serpentine woodland walk along the River Gade contrasted with smooth flowing grass lawns to the water’s edge on the other side of the river. The centrepiece of the Water Gardens is its restored flower garden, with massed roses and colourful perennial planting set within a formal grid of beds.

As part of the works, Jellicoe’s arched bridges over the Gade were renewed. New facilities have been provided to increase use and encourage people to stay longer. These include a new play space and a pavilion set within a working garden to provide facilities for the gardener and friends of the park.
